Outcome
85% of the Winemakers of Rutherglen member wineries have now completed the certification process, and are pending final approvals to be certified as sustainable under the SWA scheme. This makes the Rutherglen wine region the first region in Australia to become fully certified in sustainable winegrowing practices. Building on this success, Lecroma is now helping these wineries to become certified carbon-neutral by 2024-25. This will make Rutherglen the first wine region in the world to achieve this.

Project summary
Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) considerations are becoming critical to both business survival and market access. Independent certification schemes are the only credible way companies can demonstrate and showcase their commitment to sustainability.
Lecroma teamed up with Winemakers of Rutherglen to deliver a workshop for 16 Rutherglen-based wineries on the Sustainable Winegrowing Australia (SWA) Certification process.
We then delivered follow up consulting support for several of these wineries by conducting ESG company reviews and designing ESG programs. Lecroma had already supported Stanton & Killeen Wines to successfully become SWA certified in 2022 – making it one of the first fully certified wineries in the state across both vineyard and winery operations.
